Missing the Boat

Missing the Boat is a book about my father, Thomas Alan Dirkin, who was captured in May 1940 during rearguard action, slowing down the German advance towards Dunkirk.

He marched from the French coast to Germany and then was transported to a POW camp in Poland.

Highlights include life in the POW camp, escapes, firing squads and an 800 mile trek to freedom in 1945.

The book is a collection of stories designed as a book to preserve his history for the family. However, the book provides insights into one man’s war.
